What's for Dinner?

How things are going [17 Jul 2006|12:00pm]
I'm almost done writing the book proposal (sometimes called a prospectus, but you get the idea) and want to thank all of you--Miabbabe, Rabidperryfan, Elite_gurl and Sugarkisses (AKA gingerandbread) for keeping me on your friends lists. I know I don't contribute a lot in the LiveJournal world right now, but if you are interested in what I'm thinking about outside this book project, my academic blog at http://techsophist.net is far more active.

Anyway, thanks so much for keeping me on the friends list. Since I will be writing and revising for some time due to how long the revising process takes for a book, I really need to be able to see your blogs as I write. The four month study period will remain the only part actively used, but it helps to SEE it sometimes.

Other than that, it sounds like things are going great for you all, and for those of you going on to college this fall, good luck. It should be fun.

Not lost, just busy [15 Mar 2006|02:18pm]
[ mood | guilty ]

I've been doing most of my posting at http://techsophist.net, but thought I'd add an update post here for those of you who participated in my study last year. The dissertation is published and available through Ohiolink and I'm working as an Assistant Professor of English at Missouri State University. This summer I will be revisiting the project in order to expand it into a book. My university has given me a Summer Research Fellowship for the project, so I better get busy on it. If I have follow-up questions for any of you, and I might, I'll email. I'll also let you know the status of the manuscript, such as what publisher picks it up and publication date. University Press publishing is an interesting thing--there are plenty of manuscripts out there and not nearly enough money, so we'll see how it goes.

My office door [28 May 2005|12:01pm]
I had my dissertation defense on Wednesday and it went well. Everyone was positive and helpful, giving good revision comments and some ideas on what would be needed to make it a book. The deliberation was short, and Kris called me back into the room by saying, "You can come in now, Dr. Cadle." So that was my first official "Dr.," but I found this one when I came into the office today to work on chapter five revisions:

My office mate Inez had her defense the same day, so some anonymous one felt our name plates needed upgrading.

You Are From Mercury

You are talkative, clever, and knowledgeable - and it shows.
You probably never leave home without your cell phone!
You're witty, expressive, and aware of everything going on around you.
You love learning, playing, and taking in all of what life has to offer.
Be careful not to talk your friends' ears off, and temper your need to know everything.

...the parallels between the filmography of Don Knotts and George Bush's political career are uncanny, at least in this all-in-fun Quicktime movie. Go to www.dubyamovie.com and choose either the small or the large Quicktime movie depending on whether you use dial-up or broadband. I had completely forgotten most of the films used for clips, but remembered them and how funny they were as soon as I saw them again.

Chapter one is approved by my dissertation director and is now being reviewed by the full committee. Yea! On to chapter two. On the no-so-good side, XP blew up on my laptop and I had to spend the day doing a full system restore. I hope that when I get back to my office tomorrow that Microsoft Office will install okay without having any activation problems.

A methodology note to project participants [06 Oct 2004|09:02am]
[ mood | impressed ]

Elite_gurl brought up several good questions about methodology for the project, which I'd like to talk about here, where everyone can see it. From time to time I will post updates and answer questions about this or that and post it in my LJ. I'm also keeping another blog at techsophist.net where I write about issues in rhetoric or computers and writing and analyze things I'm reading, or even analyze my own writing process as I'm writing the dissertation. That's a good place to go if you've interested in the theory behind the project.

Anyway, Elite_gurl asked some questions about security and ownership. First thing--security. The informed consent says your stuff is confidential, but how? This is what I'm doing: When I take a screen capture of your LJ I will go to Fireworks (it's like Photoshop) and blur out the URL and your screen name. This will keep readers of the dissertation from noting the link and going to your journal directly. However, I do need a way to refer to you within the diss (yes, that is really what people call it casually, and they even call it that knowing the pun). Researchers usually make up fake names for each participant, and that's what I need to do. Rather than make up cheesy names myself, I'd like each of you to pick your own alias. That way you won't read the diss later and see yourself referred to by something you won't like, such as "Betty Jean," which was a name used in another study I'm reading about. It doesn't have to be a name-name; something more descriptive like "ilikeshoes" would work also.

Now, on to ownership. One thing about feminist research methods is that feminists acknowledge that research participants own their lives, and that include things they write and create, even if it is being studied. Before I put images into the final version of each chapter of the diss, I will put them up in a private page at techsophist.net/project so you can say yea or nea about my using that particular screen shot. How your journals look is an important part of how LJ works, so I definitely need these images. At the same time, I don't want to accidently pick a slice of posts that you don't want in. So, it's your call on which images.

If you could comment on this post and give me your project alias, that would help a lot. I'm writing chapter two and revising chapter one, so the time has come to know what to call each of you in print. Also, I still have room for a few more participants, and I need them to be people that already read and comment on your journal. If you know of someone, either refer them on to me, or give me their LJ address so I can contact them directly.

Thanks!

Fall Tales 1 [06 Oct 2004|08:23am]
[ mood | pleased ]

I feel like I've gone over to the dark side. Yesterday I bought a black leather coat.

Granted, it was car coat length, but black leather jackets/coats are soooo East Coast. To make if even more definitive, I got my (fairly new development) acrylic nails filled. So, here I am, in black leather and long, painted nails. Golly. The lengths a person can go to in the job search year.

America's best news source? [04 Oct 2004|05:49pm]
[ mood | ditzy ]

...or at least that's what The Onion says about itself, so it must be true. I had a student use The Onion as a source for a paper on rap music once and honestly didn't know it was a parody site because she used the direct link for the article. I still think she should have noticed how outrageous the claims were in the article, but oh well. Anyway they have this photo as a feature today, called "Doll Overstays Dollhouse Welcome." Barbie leads an interesting life. Not so sure Ken does, though.

In Praise of Folly [01 Oct 2004|03:24pm]
[ mood | drained ]

This is one of those multitasking days, those days that sound so full and appealing in retrospect yet energy-sapping and never-ending while being endured. *Sigh* I'm starting to write chapter two and am revisiting a bunch of sources at the same time, among them Patricia Bizzell's In Praise of Folly: A Women's Postmodern Rhetorical Authority. This is why my family won't talk to me when I first come home. I want to talk about this stuff, and it's not very digestible for general conversation. It is useful stuff, though--her division between public and private rhetorical use by women has direct application to the smarmy dissing of personal weblogs by more "authoritative" blogger/rhetors. The direct connection between women who speak in the public realm and being assessed as unchaste is infuriating, yet historically accurate. Precursors of Bloom's fear of authorship, indeed. Oddly, over half of the really good LJs recommended to me so far are friends only. I wonder if that bar between women and public rhetoric is still a factor.

Column A, Column B. [23 Sep 2004|02:46am]
[ mood | awake ]

On the plus side, I have chapter one of my dissertation printed out, in my backpack, and ready to enter the review and revise chain. It's only five days late because of a familial series of unfortunate incidents, which were sometimes alarming at the time, but came down to nothing at the end. Expensive nothings, but there you are. Here they are in column A/ column B form:

Column A: Paige's Aerobed permanently deflated in the middle of the night.
Column B Opportunity for shopping in Toledo.

A: Brakes went out for good while driving in Toledo traffic.
B: Not dead yet.

A: Drifted to a halt at a chain auto repair place. Calipers needed to be replaced. Total work equaled $671.92.
B: Auto shop was at the corner of the massive block where Franklin Park mall is. Shopping options massively increased.

A: No place to look for a bed, though.
B: Ran out of other things to look at before our ride could get there and were forced to get pedicures and manicures.

A: Purple Mazda took a solid week to be done because they had to send for parts.
B: Not sure of the good part of this except they WERE able to fix it, and it's back.

A: On the way to get the bed again, got rear-ended (in the Suzuki) at the same crosswalk light in downtown Bowling Green as a year ago.
B: No damage, but shook us up.

A: All the beds were ugly or too cheap in construction. Even the original, brake-failing shopping trip would have been futile (massive irony infusion).
B: Got a better price and a much lower delivery charge from the mattress store in BG.

Well, I hated being down to one car and that more than anything made me late with my chapter. It seemed like every day was divided into times to take other people to work/school. As soon as I got back from picking up the car, I settled in to write the end of the chapter and finished in about six hours. Proofing and the chapter works cited took until midnight, but at least it's done for now.

Choices [10 Aug 2004|10:46am]
[ mood | cynical ]

Last night after a full day of webwork (I'm working on an anthology review for CCO) I checked the onscreen cable guide and noted a unique dilemma, especially for summer viewing. What to watch? I could choose the groundbreaking series on PBS, "Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth" all in one night from 8-12. *sigh* So interesting, and good for me too. Then, on NBC from 9-11 was the finale for "For Love or Money," a visceral reality miniseries I've enjoyed because the main contestant, Rachael, was so refreshingly determined to stomp on the winning guy's heart (if he had one, of course) and cash her million dollar check. Fun's fun, but a million dollars could last a long time. So my choice was between watching Bill Moyers try to simplify for the casual PBS viewer the place of iconic figures in history and myth or to see a modern version of the old-fashioned morality play, only this time the players have names like Caleb, Rachael, and Mike rather than Choler, Greed, and Sloth.

I think you know what I watched. Rachael chose Caleb, after protracted mistrust (justified) and agonizing by both. They each in turn passionately crumpled and tossed aside their checks, Caleb's an unknown amount (turned out to be one dollar) and Rachel's a cool million. I can believe Caleb's gesture because after all, he didn't KNOW how much the check was. Rachael's actions were inexplicable, and to me, false. She would have taken the money. But she didn't. Why? The only reason I can think of besides the heavy-handed "moral" of love having more enduring value than money, which I don't believe in this case, is that the producer/writers scripted it this way,and in my judgment, did a very bad job of it. I simply don't believe it. She was smarter than that.

One month down. [10 Jul 2004|03:12pm]
[ mood | jubilant ]

I haven't really been talking about this anywhere, but I started reversing the no exercise/plenty of eating cycle a month ago. My doctor told me in my last checkup that my cholesterol wasn't dropping enough even with Lipitor and that my blood sugar had been creeping up through the last five (grad school) years until now it could be considered prediabetic. Ouch. He prescribed glucophage and upped my Lipitor prescription, but it turns out that I can't take glucophage at all, not even for one day. So... I made an appointment with the nutritionist and with a trainer (my university has both available, the trainer involves a fee) and went for the no-meds approach to getting my blood sugar down.

I whimpered my way through two set-up training sessions and now work out an hour and a half three times a week: two weight machines + cardio days and one all-cardio day. It didn't kill me, and my muscles seem to recall their days as a modern dancer--they're attempting a renovation project. At one month I am 10.5 pounds down and some (not all) of my new workout clothes need to shrink in the dryer.

I give my mother an update about this at least once a week and I honestly think the idea of all that exercise makes her nauseous. She has always been okay with the starve-til-thin approach and may be wondering if my doctor is crazy since I'm NOT cutting calories. I am rigorously sticking to the food pyramid and balancing servings rather that cutting calories. I know the slow starvation (Diet Center 500 calories a day) approach is what got me where I am now. The bounce-back factor always undid all the work.

Anyway, this exercise more/eat normal balanced meals approach is working. I always heard it would, but being threatened with diabetes was what it took to get me to do it.
